This role will be working as part of IT team designing and developing software for the business. The team provides technology solutions to help the business meet its aggressive growth targets while reducing the overall expense ratio. The team’s systems are built on a heterogeneous technology platform: newer web-enabled systems use Java technologies, while older client / server systems written in Powerbuilder continue to be supported and enhanced.

Responsibilities will include:

§ Developing IT systems using Java, SQL and possibly other tools;

§ Designing enhancements to the IT systems;

§ Supporting the production IT systems, on an occasional basis;

§ Mentoring/encouraging other IT team members as necessary;

§ Dealing with business stakeholders, for example to clarify requirements, on an occasional basis;

§ Researching and advising on technical areas currently outside of the team’s knowledge base.

Solid experience in at least 3 of the following technical skills:

· Java

· J2EE application server experience (e.g. Tomcat, WebSphere, WebLogic)

· JSPs and Struts

· Structured OO system design - preferably involving persistence to a large relational database

· JDO or other object / relational mapping tool (eg Hibernate)

· Webservices (SOAP over HTTP)

· PDF document generation using XML-FOP or similar

· Database schema design including tables, views, stored procedures etc, using Microsoft SQL Server or similar

· PowerBuilder or similar 4GL client / server application development tool

· The candidate should have 3 years+ enterprise Java experience, including successful design work on at least one system.
